Switzerland is a small, landlocked country in the heart of Europe. It has a strategic location at the crossroads of central Europe with many easily traversable passes.
Switzerland is internationally recognised as a centre of excellence for education, and not only for Swiss children. Alongside the state-funded establishments, Switzerland also offers a wide choice of high quality education at private schools. Both public and private establishments provide a comprehensive range of education at all levels.
Switzerland has a largely decentralised education system. Most decisions on the running of primary and secondary schools are taken at cantonal level. It is also the cantons, which provide the bulk of financing.
The Swiss Education system is divided into three levels:
• Primary education
• Secondary Education
• Tertiary or Higher Education
University-level education is provided not only by the cantonal universities and the two Federal Institutes of Technology, but also by the newly created Universities of Applied Sciences - which specialize in higher-level professional training. Teacher training is also now carried out at universities.
Training at advanced professional schools is regulated by the central government and the relevant professional body sets their exams. Graduates are expected to be qualified to take up posts at intermediate management level.
